Coachford AFC
Coachford Premier Team advanced to the 5 round of the Munster Junior Cup with a 3-0 win over Cullen-Lattin. This was a superb victory for the Coachford team over a very well fancied Tipperary side. After a slow start Coachford dominated most of the game, Sean O’connor put the home team in front after 25 minutes, Keith Linzell hit a 30 yard free kick to the top corner to make it 2-0 on 40 minutes. After a great run Stephen Murray hit the ball to the top corner on the hour mark to seal the victory, Coachford easily saw out the game from there on .Best for Coachford on the day were Allen Molloy, Ciaran Lucey and Mark long .The boys face a much stiffer test this weekend against Carrick Utd in the last 16 of the competition.in Carrick on Suir next Sunday at 2.00pm.
The Under 12 team who were also playing a Tipperary side last weekend were on the losing end of a 3-2 scoreline.  The boys played well but Templemore United were too strong for them. Coachford/Killanardrish  went a goal up after 15 minutes as a result of a beautiful chip from Jack Oldham but three minutes later  Templemore leveled. After half time the Tipperary side piled on the pressure and were very dangerous on the break and scored two more goals, one from a penalty. The young players from Coachford/Killanardrish battled back strongly and pulled a goal back with ten minutes to go and from then on tried valiantly to secure a draw but it was not to be. It was the teams first defeat this season and although the boys were devastated to lose they learned a lot from playing a very experienced side and will use this learning experience to progress in the league and the other cup competition that they are still involved in. The Under 17s return to the playing fields this weekend with a home game against Lakewood Athletic on Saturday in the Glebe at 11.00am. On Saturday the Under 12s play Templemore athletic in the National Cup at 2.00pm and the following day at 2.30pm Coachford play Cullen Lattin in the 4 round of the Munster Junior Cup. Chairman Thady Delaney said “ This is a huge weekend for the club and both teams have done very well to get to this stage of both competitions. The U12 Coachford/Killarnardrish team have been playing very exciting football all year and scoring a lot of goals but this weekend’s game will be very tough for them as the Tipperary Champions are a very well balanced side. It will be an exciting contest and we are all hoping that our boys will advance. The Premier team are in good shape but have been suffering from a lack of games due to recent games being postponed because of the wet weather but we are hoping home advantage should even things up a bit.” A large crowd is expected at both games in Coachford this weekend.

As our name suggests, our priority is the elderly in our vicinity, particularly those who live alone or in isolated areas - we provide a monthly chiropody clinic in the Community House in Coachford, in addition to providing assistance where heat and food are needed and funds are low. We also arrange for the fitting and installation of personal and smoke alarms, as well as sensor lighting. However, given the current recession and the stark fact that many with young families are in dire need of temporary assistance, we attempt to extend our resources, insofar as we can, to also ensure their wellbeing - for who knows who will next be hit with an energy, school or other bill that we will be unable to pay and that may just send us spiralling into the depths of despair? We do NOT consider ourselves a charity, but merely an organisation that - we would hope - provides a stepping stone to stability and security for anyone that may need a helping hand, be it temporarily or on an ongoing basis. We do not judge and at no time to we ever infringe on the privacy or particular circumstances of those we are privileged enough to help at any given time, as confidentiality is at the very heart of our work and existence. In order to help us to continue our work, we would encourage the people of Aghabullogue parish to consider joining Care of the Aged because, the farther our reach, the more people we can assist in some way. If you are interested in putting your shoulder to the wheel and helping the most vulnerable in our parish, or if you find yourself in difficulty regarding any basic need, please contact John, at 087 6479112, Sheila, at 7334328, Therese, at 7434734, or Michael, at 086 8125272. May we again take this opportunity to thank all of you for your staunch support throughout the years and we look forward to the continuation of that support

Compantas Chorcai present "In High Germany" by Dermot Bolger, in the Village Inn on Fri January 20th at 9pm. Directed by Liam Weir, and performed by Gerry Motherway.
"An Irish emigrant in Germany tells his son about football, and about home, through the nostalgia for a match played many years ago. This is the story of Euro '88, the largest football event on the continent, and the Irish team are centre. The excitement is high for football fanatics like Eoin, Shane and Mick, all working abroad. They find themselves in Germany supporting the Irish team, witnessing the highs and the lows and the cultural divides that separate them. For these emigrant friends, home is no longer a birthplace. Home is where their team plays, and there will be many adventures on and off the field before the final whistle blows".

Point to Point Aghabullogue Point to Point was a huge success last Sunday. The event being held for the 25th time, enjoyed glorious weather conditions and the crowds turned out to enjoy a wonderful day out. The races turned up surprising winners and the bookies weren't that much wealthier leaving the excellent facilities in  Jack Murphy's  property in Dromatimore. The Parents Association from Aghabullogue National School raised a tidy sum of money by selling beautiful soups, sandwiches, tea and coffee in the hospitality tent. The only disappointment of the day was that 'Wilcos Celt', the horse trained by local man  John O'Shaughnessy was a faller early on in the race. The hard working committee organised this event brilliantly and everyone is looking forward to the event in 2013.

Crime Prevention
Sergeant Ian O'Callaghan, Crime Prevention Officer with the West Cork Garda Division gave a very informative talk in Aghabullogue Hall on Monday. Sergeant O’Callaghan also gave a lot of advice on how people can make their properties more secure. He asked people to make sure there are no valuable items left on view in cars, make sure that people keep their back doors locked no matter how briefly you might be away from your house and if you have an alarm make sure that it is working and activated. Domestic properties are more at risk during the day time while a lot of houses are empty.  The Garda asked all those present to be more aware of strangers driving around the locality, to look out for their neighbours and family and to report anything suspicious to Macroom Garda Station no mater how trivial people might think it is.

COACHFORD AFC
Coachford/Killanardrish to represent Cork in Under 12 soccer.
The Coachford/Killanardrish U12 soccer team have qualified for the Munster section of the National Cup after defeating Wilton United on a scoreline of 4- 1 in a very tough contest in Carrigadrohid last Sunday morning. The home team got off to a great start when only after 5 minutes, central defender; Marc Dineen sent a wonderful clearance over the top and into the Coachford/Killanardrish forward line. Jack Oldham did some wonderful work to beat two of the opposition’s defenders before passing it to his team’s striker, Luke Casey who hit a rocket to the back of the net to set the mid Cork side on their way. 15 minutes later Luke Casey spotted the Leeds goalkeeper off his line and availed of the opportunity to chip the ball over him and into the net in what had to be one this striker’s best goals of the season so far. Jack Oldham scored the teams third goal five minutes before half time with a wonderful individual effort. It was the least that Jack deserved as he worked tirelessly in midfield all day and was outstanding for his team. The second half was a tough encounter as both teams energies were drained in the cold and damp conditions. Coachford/Killanardrish pushed forward and broke the Wilton United defence with 10 minutes gone when Adam Murphy passed a beautiful ball to Luke Casey who struck it beautifully for his hat trick and to put the result beyond any doubt. Although the score line will reflect an easy game for the home team, this was certainly not the case and the midfield and defence had to put in a huge effort to make sure this well fancied team from Bishopstown did not advance to the next round of this competition.

Coachford  National School are Champions in Lee Valley contest

Coachford National School secured a tremendous victory in the Sciath na Scoil final at Pairc Ui Rinn today when they beat Canovee on a score line of 4.02 to  3.04  in what was one of the best games played at the venue all week
Canovee got off to an ideal start when they scored a goal almost from the throw in and this was followed up 10 minutes later with another goal .Both teams were playing to the top of their ability and the standard of football was excellent. Coachford looked dangerous in front of goal with Luke Casey and Paul Dilworth always appearing to be a threat to the Canovee defense. With five minutes to go in the first half Alex O Donovan pulled a goal back for Coachford and David Thompson finished the first half with a point from a free.

The second half was another tight contest with both team’s defenders excelling in their duties. Marc Dineen and Tadgh Bradley were playing some outstanding football stopping everything coming towards them while the half back line of Daniel O Driscoll and Billy Dennehy were working tirelessly. The midfield pairing of Shane Tarrant and David Thompson began to have a major influence in the game. The half forward line of Alex O Donovan and Paul Dilworth were making probing runs into the Canovee back line and feeding the ball onwards to a Coachford forward line starved of ball in the first half. The full forwards, Aaron Doherty and Luke Casey  were causing the Canovee defense a lot of concern every time that they got the ball and it wasn’t long after the restart that Luke Casey found the back of the net putting  Coachford a point in the lead. Canovee then piled on the pressure and were rewarded with a point and this was followed quickly with a point from a free. Canovee were now a point up but Coachford stepped up a gear and with some brilliant play from Aaron Doherty and Luke Casey another goal was scored and put Coachford back in the lead with 5 minutes to go. Canovee then scored a point from a free and a goal which only narrowly beat the Coachford keeper, Dylan Martin. Canovee were now two points up. The Canovee midfield won the kick out and a blistering shot was heading towards the back of the net only for Dylan Martin to send it out for a 45 off his leg and saved what would have been an almost unassailable lead. This let off spurned Coachford on and after some tremendous pressure around the Canovee goalmouth from Paul Dineen, Paul Dilworth and David Thompson a goal was scored by Thompson to put the lads in green a point ahead with a minute left. Canovee were not about to give up however and worked hard to win the ball and score the equalizing point with the game going into injury time.  Coachford then used all their experience and pace to move the ball quickly down the field and Luke Casey popped up again to save the day and secure the win for Coachford by scoring the winning point.

Once the referee blew the final whistle celebrations erupted. It was a tremendous game and Canovee were extremely unlucky to lose this contest but Coachford can be very proud of their victory and their hard work and never say die attitude stood them well.

Technology brings villages together to answer questions
The ACR Community Council table quiz was a huge success last Saturday night. The quiz  which was attended by over 180 people was held in the three villages, Aghabullogue, Coachford and Rylane. Each of the venues were linked to each other through an internet link. This was a very novel idea and proved to be a huge hit with all involved.  The same questions were used at the three venues, Cremin’s Bar Aghabullogue, Hogan’s Bar Coachford and The Anvil Bar, Rylane with the winners from each village going up against each other for the overall prize and the glory of being crowned “Brains of the Community”. For the final round, the quiz master in Aghabullogue asked the questions over the video link to all the pubs and when the answers were totted up the team from Cremin’s emerged victorious.  Doug Lucey PRO of the Community Council said “ The quiz was great fun and more importantly it showed how as a community we can work together for a common goal. It was a unique way in bringing us together and for a community with a huge history and heritage it was brilliant to see the way we embraced modern technology. The Village of Aghabullogue has the bragging rights for the next 12 months but already the other communities are looking forward to a rematch. We have to thank Sean Walsh from Cork Community Broadband and Community Council member Deidre O’Donovan for the hard work carried out by them to make sure the technology worked and proved to us that anything is possible if you have the vision and the will power to carry it off.”   Click here to see the questions

Coachford AFC
Killanardrish/ Coachford under 12s  enjoyed a well deserved victory in the 3rd round of the National Cup when they defeated Carrigaline 2-0 in Carrigaline last weekend. The game was a very close affair with both teams being careful not to concede any score early on. Both defences were outstanding and made the game a very tight contest. At half time the game was as close as it could be with no team scoring in the first 30 minutes. However on resumption, Luke Casey headed down the left wing and approached the goal at a tight angle and fired a wonderful shot which beat the Carrigaline goalkeeper. Finding themselves a goal down Carrigaline laid siege to the Coachford goal but the defence battened down the hatches and repelled all the attacks for the next 15 minutes. With five minutes to go Coachford scored their second goal following some excellent play from Midfield allowing Jack O. Connor to set up Luke Casey to score his second.
This was a brilliant team performance from Killanardish/Coachford with some particular match winning performances from Liam Twohig in goals and John McMahon and Adam Murphy in Midfield. Luke Casey again proved his worth in front of goals.
Team: Liam Twohig, Luke O’ Sullivan, Paul Dilworth, Marc Dineen, Connor Dineen, John Mc Mahon, Adam Murphy, Jack Oldham, Tadgh Bradley, Luke Casey, Joshua Martin.
Subs: Aaron Doherty for Tadgh Bradley, Jack O’Connor for Joshua Martin and Jack Murphy  for Jack Oldham.

Fundraising Draw
Killinardrish / Coachford AFC have recently launched their latest fundraising draw. The proceeds from this draw will be used to get the second pitch at the Glebe up and running for next season.
The development of this pitch to date has involved the building of a concrete reinforcing wall along the southern side-line boundary and the insertion of a full drainage system, along with levelling and re-seeding work. The cost of this work so far has been in the region of €110,000.
To get it ready for next season requires a further outlay of money to provide a net barrier on top of the wall which runs to 110m long and also to install new goalposts and netting behind the goals. The pitch will be the main venue for the schoolboys teams.
While Coachford AFC is cognitive of the times we are living in, they feel that they have put forward a draw which is affordable to everyone and offers top prizes which include;

      A week for 2 in a four star beach side hotel in the Algarve.
         €500 sponsored by Dooniskey Construction
         €300 sponsored by O’Callaghans Bar
         €200 sponsored by TJ Lyons Footwear
         Hi-If system sponsored by Murphy’s Electrical.

All the above is available at a cost of just €3 per line or for better value and more of a chance of winning you may purchase 4 lines for €10. The club would hope that people would be in a position to buy the 4 line option.

The club is optimistic of a very positive response from the public to this draw as they have always been very supportive in the past. The facilities provided at the Glebe so far are a testament to the support which we have received to date.
We would also like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the sponsors of the prizes and to wish all who purchase tickets the best of luck in the draw.

Aghabullogue GAA
Aghabullogue Juniors continued on their winning streak in the Mid Cork Division. The footballers followed up on the success of the hurlers when they defeated Iveleary to capture the  Division 3 Football league  Final on Sunday, 30th October.
The first half of this final was a close affair, with Mark Long recording the first score of the game. Iveleary then matched this with a point from play. Aghabullogue then recorded a further two points in the first half with Pat Walsh and Mark Long each recording a point from play. Ian O'Sullivan pulled off two great saves for Aghabullogue, which kept Aghabullogue in the game but they trailed at half time on a scoreline of 0-06 to 0-03.

Aghabullogue started the second half strongly and recorded the first four points, which pushed Aghabullogue one point ahead. The sides then exchanged the next few scores and little was between them. With five minutes to go, the sides were on level terms, however Aghabullogue pushed ahead with impressive scores from Mark long and Peter O'Riordan. Iveleary managed to record another point, however with the Aghabullogue defense on top form, it was not enough to overcome a determined Aghabullogue side! The final whistle was blown and Aghabullogue were crowned 2011 Junior B Football League Champions and Denis Finnegan lifted the cup on their behalf.

Coachford are keen to get their very own Queen

The Coachford Autumn Festival is being held this year From August 19th  to 21st. The festival will feature a round of the All Ireland Ferguson 20 Tractor Build competition, a large veteran, vintage and classic car and tractor display, a High Nelly run and many other activities throughout the three days.

The organisers of the festival are looking forward to a huge attendance again this year and were thrilled with the large number of people that turned up to exhibit and view the wonderful range of vintage and classic cars and tractors in 2010.  €3,000 from last year’s event was presented to the AWARE charity and the same charity along with some local groups have been selected as the main benefactors from this years event.

One of the highlights from last year was the High Nelly run when many of those participating dressed up in clothes from the period that the bikes travelled the highways and byways of the country. “It was like stepping back in time to the 1920s to see these wonderful machines back on the roads again. We are expecting the event to be bigger this time around and are looking forward to seeing many more men and women dressing up in the style of the 1920’s to the 1950’s and cycling whatever High Nelly they can find between now and  Friday August 19 ” said Danny Riordan, Festival coordinator.

Last years Queen of the festival competition was a fabulous success and the organisers are looking for more people to take part this year. The Queen competition takes place on Saturday August 20 and all who took part last year enjoyed the experience. “There were 13 competitors at the 2010 event but this year interest is already very high and many businesses are anxious that they find the right person to represent them on the night so we are asking if there are any young women out there who would like to enter just let us know and we’ll get them a suitable sponsor”, said Paul Murphy, Secretary

Sunday the 21st is the big day at the festival when the tractor build competition will take place and the host club will be up against tractor building teams from counties Donegal, Galway, Tyrone and Cavan. Many people are expected to attend the festival for this event and to also view the large vintage car and tractor display, the old time threshing, tractor balancing, mini digger challenge, power pulling, farmers market, sheaf tossing, mini club of Ireland display, dog show, Pig on a Spit, Model Toy display, children’s sports, McFadden’s Funfair and lots more.

Tadgh Murphy Chairman is eagerly looking forward to this year’s event “last year was fantastic but the challenge for us is to make sure that we not only match last year but to go one step better. I suppose that we are fortunate that Coachford is so accessible to many people visiting the show. We also have wonderful facilities to hold the festival at the GAA grounds in Coachford and we are very fortunate that Aghabullogue GAA have come on board to support the community festival.”

McFadden’s Funfair will be in Coachford from early on Friday the 19th and  the festival kicks off with the high Nelly run on Friday evening at 5.30pm and a 7 a side hurling tournament. Saturday will feature the Dog and Harrier show along with the Mini club of Ireland display, Power Pull, Mini digger competition, tractor balancing and the main event of the day, the Festival Queen competition and festival dance will round off a hectic Saturday.
